Middle Ages 500-1500 ADIn the Middle Ages there was a bunch of different kingdoms. One of those kingdoms was the Vikings. They came from the land of Scandinavia, which is present day Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. The Vikings would invade Europe and raid all of the villages close to the ocean. They could go up inlet and rivers very far because of their longboats, which were really shallow. They became known as the "Scourge of Europe" and there was european prayers that people would say to protect them from the Vikings. There was two important discoverers in the Viking civilization. One of them was Erik the Red, who discovered Greenland in 983 AD. Another was Leif Erickson, who landed at Newfoundland which is in North America in 1000 AD.

In 1095 AD, Pope Urban II called for the Crusades. There was many reasons for the Crusades they were, Rescue the Holy Land, Forgiveness of sins, died gained salvation, Increase Prestige of Church, Reduced feudal warfare, and Taxes and debts excused. The First Crusade lasted 3 years from 1096 to 1099. The christian Knights slaugtered 10,000 Muslims and Jews. It set up four feudal States, Jerusalem, Edessa, Antioch, and Tripoli. Crusade means Latin for Cross. The Second Crusade lasted 4 years from 1144 to 1148. It was the Muslims first success against the Christians. The Third Crusade lasted from 1189 to 1192. Jerusalem fell to the Muslims under Saladin "The Magnificent" in 1187. The Christians couldn't win Jerusalem back. The Fourth Crusade was in 1204 AD. Eight years later was the Children's crusade where 20,000 kids were tricked and sold into slavery into North Africa.

From 1347 to 1351 in Europe was a really tough time. The Bubonic Plague or better know as The Black Death hit Europe with a bang. Over 1/3 of Europe's population died from this disease. The disease originated in Asia and came to Europe through trade routes. It is spread by fleas on Black Rats. There was the Flagellants who beat themselves to beg for forgiveness from God who sent the plague to punish men for sins.The nursery rhyme Ring around the Rosie's was about the plague in 1664.
